A Flandrian for Flanders

My Belgian beer fund is safe for this year. Stijn Devolder, a former Disco rider now racing for Boonen’s Quick Step squad, soloed off the front of the race with 25km to go and stayed away. Strong riding. The Belgian national champion livery Devolder is wearing is pretty cool too. If it had come back together, Boonen had shown how strong he was by riding everyone but Devolder and Flecha off his wheel on the dread Koppenberg climb.

Next up Paris-Roubaix, offering more cobbles and wind and less climbing. American George Hincapie is looking good with his fifth place at the Ronde.

Most Americans follow and are beginning to get the Tour de France, but this really is my most favorite part of the Euro racing season.

  1. I saw that finish and it was something. He was all alone, but those two guys battling for second were amazing. I kept thinking that they were going to collide. Then the rest of the pack came in all together. Quite a race!

  2. i think hincappie could `ve went with him , but got caught witing for boonen to make his move, no one else chased …. quick step is strong, i look forward to hincappie -boonen battle royal ON SUNDAY……..

  3. you ain’t kiddin’

  4. I’m with ya Chris, Hell of the North is my fav.

  5. 1 day classics is all the attention span I have these days.
As I was watching it on Versus – they kept showing the breakaway before the Belgiums Nat’l Champ attacked where he just sat in for what seemed like 10km, didn’t work and they let him. I’m trying that strategy at my next crit – assuming could I get in a breakaway.
Fabian is my pick for the cobbles.

  6. Those final 25km are not easy, I thought he was going to crack on the Muur. The power of the Belgian National kit.
Winning the Tour of Flanders in that jersey is a Career accomplishment.
