Californians apparently threw quite a party on Mount Palomar for the last stage of the Tour of California, according to this Velonews article. Sounds like a lot of fun for a race that Astana, like Postal/Discovery before it, sucked all the drama out of. There were a few moments on the climb when Lance et al disappeared, leaving Levi alone to fend against Saxo Bank’s Schlecks and Voigt and Garmin’s Vandevelde and Danielson, but the drama ended on the descent. Alas.
Still it looked like a good time was had on the roadside. American fans more than matched the Euros for roadside insanity with costumed characters straight out of Carnival replacing crazed Basque and Dutch fans.
The photo below makes me want a bloody mary. Yum.
